Prophet

Word references - Easton's Book of scriptures Lexicon - Prophet

Prophet [S]

(Heb. nabi, from a root signifying "to bubble forward, as from a wellspring," subsequently "to absolute",  Psalms 45:1 ). This Jewish word is the first and the most, for the most part, utilized for a prophet. In the hour of Samuel another word, ro'eh , "soothsayer", started to be utilized ( 1 Samuel 9:9 ). It happens multiple times in reference to Samuel. A short time later another word, hozeh , "diviner" ( 2 Samuel 24:11 ), was utilized. In  1 Chronicles 29:29 all these three words are utilized: "Samuel the soothsayer (ro'eh), Nathan the prophet (nabi'), Gad the diviner" (hozeh). In Josh 13:22 Balaam is called (Heb.) a kosem "soothsayer," a word utilized uniquely of a bogus prophet.

The "prophet" broadcasted the message given to him, as the "diviner" viewed the vision of God. (See Numbers 12:6 Numbers 12:8 .) Hence a prophet was a representative for God; he spake in God's name and by his power (  Exodus 7:1 ). He is the mouth by which God addresses men ( Jeremiah 1:9; Isaiah 51:16 ), and subsequently what the prophet says isn't of man however of God (  2 Peter 1:20  2 Peter 1:21; Look at Hebrews 3:7; Acts 4:25; 28:25 ). Prophets were the quick organs of God for the correspondence of his brain and will to men ( Deuteronomy 18:18 Deuteronomy 18:19 ). The entire Expression of God may in this general sense be talked about as prophetic, since it was composed of men who got the disclosure they conveyed from God, regardless of what its inclination may be. The anticipating of future occasions was not important but rather just an accidental piece of the prophetic office. The incredible undertaking doled out to the prophets whom God raised up among the individuals was "to address good and religious maltreatment, to announce the extraordinary good and religious certainties which are associated with the character of God, and which lie at the establishment of his administration."

Anyone being a representative for God to man may consequently be known as a prophet. Consequently Enoch, Abraham, and the patriarchs, as bearers of God's message (  Genesis 20:7; Exodus 7:1; Psalms  105:15 ), as likewise Moses ( Deuteronomy 18:15; 34:10; Hosea 12:13 ), are positioned among the prophets. The seventy older folks of Israel ( Numbers 11:16-29 ), "when the soul settled upon them, forecasted;" Asaph and Jeduthun "forecasted with a harp" (1 Chronicles 25:3 ). Miriam and Deborah were prophetesses ( Exodus 15:20; Judges 4:4 ). The title accordingly has a general application to all who have messages from God to men.

Be that as it may, while the prophetic blessing was therefore practiced from the earliest starting point, the prophetical request all things considered started with Samuel. Universities, "schools of the prophets", were established for the preparation of prophets, who were comprised, an unmistakable request ( 1 Samuel 19:18-24; 2 Lords 1 Samuel 2:3 1 Samuel 2:15; 4:38 ), which proceeded to the end of the Old Confirmation. Such "schools" were set up at Ramah, Bethel, Gilgal, Gibeah, and Jericho. The "children" or "devotees" of the prophets were youngsters (  2 Kings 5:22; 2 Kings 9:1 2 Kings 9:4 ) who lived respectively at these distinctive "schools" ( 4:38-41 ). These youngsters have instructed the basics of mainstream information, however, they have raised to practice the workplace of prophet, "to lecture unadulterated profound quality and the genuine love of Jehovah, and to act along and co-ordinately with the brotherhood and government in controlling the state aright and checking all endeavors at illicitness and oppression."

In New Confirmation times the prophetical office has proceeded. Our Ruler is every now and again talked about as a prophet ( Luke 13:33; 24:19 ). He was and is the incomparable Prophet of the Congregation. There was likewise in the Congregation a particular request of prophets ( 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 2:20; 3:5 ), who made new divine revelations. They varied from the "instructor," whose office it was to bestow certainties previously uncovered.

Of the Old Confirmation prophets, there are sixteen, whose predictions structure some portion of the roused ordinance. These are isolated into four gatherings:

The prophets of the northern kingdom (Israel), viz., Hosea, Amos, Joel, Jonah.

The prophets of Judah, viz., Isaiah, Jeremiah, Obadiah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah.

The prophets of Bondage, viz., Ezekiel and Daniel.

The prophets of the Rebuilding, viz., Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
